For No One

Do you have an opinion about the Beatles? Do you really think they deserve the title of being the 'biggest' and 'the best'?

If you had asked me that 15 years ago I'd have probably said they were alright thats all. Today though I would have to say I do believe they are the best that there has ever been. I now hear the music and appreciate its originality and musicality that many try to mimic. I listen to the lyrics and appreciate how inciteful Paul McCartney and John Lennon and even George Harrison were about things they observed within life and their environment. True at times they had the benefit of drugs to create and express what was going on in their minds.

Do you have a favourite Beatles song? Or album?

Mine is the melancholy masterpiece called "For No One" its from the Revolver album. It's not the lyrics but rather the tone and feeling of this one that draws me to it.

here's the lyrics: (tried to get an audio link but everything is straped down on the web regarding the Beatles)

For No One

The day breaks
Your mind aches
You find that all her words of kindness linger on
When she no longer needs you
She wakes up
She makes up
She takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry;
She no longer needs you

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years

You want her
You need her
And yet you don't believe her when she says
Her love is dead
You think she needs you

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years

You stay home
She goes out
She says that long ago she knew someone
But now he's gone
She doesn't need him

Your day breaks
Your mind aches
There will be times when all the things she said will fill your head,
You won't forget her

And in her eyes you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years
Try and look this song and the Album out if you haven't heard it. Its worth the effort.

Fanny: Front bottom.... on a woman.... and also found on Chuckie

Anyhow, the Beatles invented the sad chord, which got me hooked on Eleanor Rigby.... so hooked I borrowed a guitar from a friend, got a copy of a tab book from the library and learnt how to play it in its entirety.

This was the single event that got me to dump the guitar and take up the drums, that and my complete lack of tone.

(I can still play ER on the guitar BTW... its a bit ropey, but if done infront of an audience will get me free vegetables)

Song: Norwegian Wood or The Things We Said Today. Album: Sgt. Pepper.

The Beatles are the Beatles. Nobody comes close. I still laugh when I think of all the groups who've come along since claiming to be "the next Beatles" or "better than the Beatles." I'll never forget the argument I had many moons ago with my step-daughter - she was fighting for Foreigner. Foreigner! (I laugh in your general direction!) She cringes when I remind her now, by the way.

There'll never be another Elvis or Duke Ellington or Patsy Cline - and there'll never be another Beatles. I'm such an old codger that I remember when they came on the scene - totally original, nothing sounded like them.

Retire the jersey, folks.

Eleanor rigby is on the Revolver album too, in fact i'd say i'm quite partial to it too. Thanks for your that explanation chap!
Just talking about the Beatles makes me crave a listen.
I would like to be able to play For No One on my keyboard by the end of the year if possible, pretending to be Paul McCartney.

Elvis does also stick in my mind as a one off. The Duke is great too. Ray Charles sticks out to me and good old Satchmo!! But there's just something about the Beatles for me.
